My Interview With Bonnie Wright

It’s the end of an era for Bonnie Wright. With the filming of the last installment of the Harry Potter Saga done and dusted, all that Bonnie has left to do is simply revel in the impending worldwide success the final chapter of the magical tale shall bring.

Arriving at her DRAMA photoshoot in the wake of her final days of shooting- “So surreal, I thought the last day would never come”- Bonnie is noticeably at ease despite having a busy day in store. Shortly after the photoshoot, she was hotfooting it straight to the airport as she was spending the weekend at a music festival in Ireland with her long-time boyfriend, actor Jamie Campbell Bower. But Bonnie is in no rush. As she munches on toast while her hair is suitably coiffed, she enthralls the DRAMA team with a plethora of Potter anecdotes ranging from the fundamentals of pyrotechnics to the inside scoop of the recent wrap party.

Donning a variety of playful ensembles, she strides on set and automatically proves to be the perfect model candidate. With her porcelain skin and delicate features, Bonnie is almost doll-like in appearance. Yet despite her fresh and youthful complexion, she exudes a certain poise and grace well beyond her nineteen years. It’s this sort of level-headiness that perhaps gives rise to a persona of understated cool, one that is unmistakably unfazed by the hysteria sparked by the multi-million pound franchise. “I’m lucky that have the most wonderful and supportive family and friends”, says Bonnie, “They keep my feet firmly on the ground!”

It’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since she first graced our screens as the character of Ginny, the shy, flame-haired younger sister of Harry’s bumbling best friend Ron.  “It was a completely new world to me” she recalls, “ and I fell completely in love with it”.

Since those first fleeting scenes in The Philosopher’s Stone, the succeeding films have seen Ginny gradually become a crucial character within the series, one that culminates with a blossoming love affair between Ginny and Mr. Potter himself. Naturally, as the character of Ginny grew and developed, in reality, so too did Bonnie as the films played a crucial role in shaping the person she is today:  “It is part of me. Everything in life is a contributing factor to who you are. I have had such a colourful and enjoyable life so far and one can only hope it continues”.

Brimming with ambition, Bonnie fondly reflects on her experiences while making Harry Potter and although she acknowledges the importance it has had in cementing her flourishing career, she looks forward to what the future has in store. Of course, after playing the same character for a decade, Bonnie admits she is eager to sink her teeth into a part decidedly more grown up than the intrepid, magical school- girl of late.

Her next role is just that. In Geography of the Hapless Heart, Bonnie plays Mia, one half of a young couple whose tumultuous relationship is reflected upon by her love-lorn boyfriend. The tale is entitled Sweat and forms one fifth of the film which focuses on various love stories set in five different cities around the globe. “It was a very fast and intense project”, reveals Bonnie, “We shot it on the South Bank in London and I have to say, I had so much fun making it!”

So with countless acting possibilities no doubt in the pipeline, what does the new year hold for this young star? “I am really excited for 2011- I don't know why! I’m looking forward to spending time with friends and of course Jamie, as he has a break from work. Ultimately I am driven by my hunger to continue acting, to learn and to see the world!” Ah- a busy schedule ahead no less.
